Conjugate Vaccine

A conjugate vaccine binds to polysaccharide-specific B-cells that communicate carrier protein antigens to T-cells, inducing a T-cell–dependent immune response. These T-cells release cytokines that help B-cells transform into plasma cells that immediately release antibodies and form memory B-cells that are responsible for immune memory (See figure below).1-3

Immune memory is critical for long-lasting prevention of diseases. Upon first exposure to a T-cell–dependent antigen (i.e. protein), the immune system mounts a slow primary response and induces the formation of long-lived memory cells. Upon subsequent exposure, these memory cells launch a faster, stronger, and longer-lasting secondary response.1-3

CRM197, cross-reacting material; IgG, immunoglobulin G.
