Although the CVD burden has increased globally, it has prominently shifted towards low- and middle-income countries such as India, owing to population growth and ageing.1 Since the dawn of the century, CVDs have become the prominent cause of mortality in India, largely resulting from the increase in the prevalence and risk factors for CVDs. In India, the estimated prevalence of CVDs was 54.5 million in 2016. At present, 1 out of 4 deaths in the country results from CVDs and stroke and ischaemic heart disease account for >80% of this burden.2 While CVD death rate was 155.7 per 100,000 in 1990, it increased to 209.1 per 100,000 in 2016. Population aging alone is largely accountable for increased CVD death rates.1
