What Are the National and Global Recommendations for Pneumococcal Vaccination in Patients With Rheumatologic Diseases?

   

Different global guidelines from the ACR (2015), EULAR (2019), Finnish Rheumatology Association (2012), Canadian Rheumatology Association (2012), Brazilian Society of Rheumatology (2012) and the British Society for Rheumatology (2019) recommend pneumococcal vaccination in patients with rheumatic diseases. With regard to the type of pneumococcal vaccines, PCV13 or PPSV23, recommendations vary among different countries. The US ACIP (2019), SItI and STIKO at the Robert Koch Institute provide the general recommendations on vaccinating immunocompromised patients including iatrogenic immunosuppression.1-9 The IMA (2018) recommends completing the immunisation schedule of rheumatology patients before initiating immunosuppressive therapy.10
